A Complete Guide to Earning Your A+ Certification

Lately, I have been working to help Cybrarians make sense of certifications, more specifically, what are the proper credentials for different career goals and the way to get those certifications. Seeing that many Cybrary users are simply looking to get started, it stands to reason that it provides an overview to get perhaps the most popular IT certification, the CompTIA A + certification.

The CompTIA A + course focuses on the basics of computing technology including repair, basic networking, installation and configuration of PCs, laptops, and related hardware and configuration for mobile devices, including Android and Apple.

For those who ultimately seek a career in hacking or security, it is important to recognize that unless you are arriving with an in depth IT background, you will need to know the basics covered in the A + first and work your Way from there.

Future hackers will probably want to progress from CompTIA A +, CompTIA Network +, CompTIA Security + before advancing to CSA + or CEH, and learning at least one programming language along the way, although there are different opinions on this.

So, for those starting in the beginning, I will provide a guide to gaining your CompTIA A + certification and point towards specific tools that will help you achieve success.

Description of CompTIA A +

The CompTIA A + exam is designed to certify the competence of entry-level PC IT professionals in the installation, maintenance, customization and operation of personal computers. Obtaining certification validates IT entry-level skills in today's essential domains and ensures proper communication and customer service skills.

How does it compare?

CompTIA also offers a Fundamentals exam, code FC0-U51, which means that it has the fundamental knowledge to identify and explain the components of the computer, install software, establish network connectivity and prevent security risks. Although it covers some topics similar to those of A +, this exam is aimed more specifically at "advanced end users and entry level IT professionals".

A similar certification also meant for beginners with less computer experience is the IC3 Global Digital Literacy Standard 5. This certification means that you possess the fundamental knowledge to effectively use some of the most current and prominent technologies in the world. The exam is divided into 3 parts: fundamentals of computing, lifecycle and key applications.

Who is it for?

This certification aims to be the starting point for those seeking to enter IT. As a stand-alone certification, it prepares individuals to meet call center, help desk and work equipment repair.

When knowledge of this certification is based on, it can help individual progress to learn networking, security, and even hacking. Although not recommended for those looking for specific programming careers, general computer knowledge can always be useful.

According to CompTIA "If you are new to the IT industry, this will help you put your best foot forward. And if you are already an IT professional, CompTIA A + certification validates your skills and can boost your career."

Why should I win A + certification?

There are a variety of reasons why A + certification is a good option to get a credential. The A + certification exam does not require any prerequisites, presents candidates to essential IT domains and is globally recognized as the brand of a qualified entry level technician.

Typically, A + certification is a mandatory hiring requirement for a variety of entry-level IT jobs and those with this certification are more likely to receive higher wages. For example, on average, certified professionals make between 5 and 15% more than their non-certified counterparts in the United States.

A + certification is a requirement or choice in the advanced certification paths of leading technology vendors, including Microsoft, Cisco, Novell, HP and IBM. In addition, organizations such as the United States Department of Defense, Dell, Intel and Lenovo recognize this entry level certification as validating that an employee is competent to fulfill the roles of support technician, service technician and support specialist .
